USDA 18-item Household Food Security Survey Module (HFSSM)

The U.S. Household Food Security Survey Module (HFSSM) is an 18-item questionnaire developed by the USDA Economic Research Service to measure household food security status. This standardized survey instrument uses a three-stage design with screeners to minimize respondent burden while obtaining reliable data on food access and hunger. The module assesses the degree to which households have consistent access to adequate food by asking about experiences such as worrying about food running out, not being able to afford balanced meals, cutting meal sizes, and going hungry. It includes both adult-referenced and child-referenced questions for households with children. The HFSSM serves as the primary tool for the annual national food security assessment conducted through the Current Population Survey Food Security Supplement, and is widely used by researchers, government agencies, and organizations to measure food insecurity prevalence and evaluate food assistance program effectiveness.
