UK-CPRD GOLD (Clinical Practice Research Datalink)

UK CPRD GOLD (Clinical Practice Research Datalink Gold) The CPRD GOLD dataset is a longitudinal, anonymised electronic health record (EHR) resource that captures routine primary care data from UK general practice surgeries using the Vision clinical software system. It contains demographic details, coded diagnoses and symptoms (Read codes), drug prescriptions, vaccination history, laboratory test results, referrals, consultations and linked mortality information from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) 4 L1-L8 . Established in 1987, the database now holds records for >21 million historical patients and 3 million currently active patients across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland 4 L21-L27 . The dataset is created and maintained by the Clinical Practice Research Datalink, a research service operated by the UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) with support from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) 2 L1-L6 . Its primary purpose is to provide real world evidence for pharmaco epidemiology, drug safety surveillance, disease burden estimation and health service evaluation 2 L1-L5 . Key features that set CPRD GOLD apart are: (1) a nationally representative cohort with up to 30 years of follow up, (2) systematic linkage to external datasets (hospital episode statistics, cancer registries and death records), (3) rigorous data quality checks and validation that have underpinned > 3,000 peer reviewed publications, and (4) a structured Read code taxonomy that facilitates detailed clinical phenotyping. These attributes make CPRD GOLD a cornerstone resource for UK based public health, academic and industry research.
