Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS)

Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) The Canadian Community Health Survey is a cross sectional, annually administered household survey that captures detailed information on the health status, health care utilization, and determinants of health for Canadians aged 12 years and older. It records self reported physical and mental health, chronic conditions, health service use, lifestyle behaviours (e.g., smoking, alcohol, physical activity, diet), and a wide range of sociodemographic variables. The survey also includes optional modules on nutrition, mental health, and rapid response items for emerging issues such as COVID 19 vaccine willingness. The CCHS is produced by Statistics Canada, the national statistical agency, in partnership with provincial and territorial health ministries. Its primary purpose is to provide a robust evidence base for health surveillance, policy development, and program evaluation at the national, provincial/territorial, and regional (health region) levels. Researchers, public health officials, NGOs, and media use the data for population health research, trend monitoring, and health equity assessments. Key features that distinguish the CCHS include: * A large, nationally representative sample ( 65 000 respondents per year since 2007) enabling reliable estimates at the health region level every two years. * A modular design that combines a core annual component with optional and occasional focused modules, allowing flexibility to address emerging health topics. * Public use microdata files (annual and two year combined) that support detailed multivariate analyses while preserving confidentiality. Overall, the CCHS is a cornerstone resource for monitoring Canadians health and informing evidence based decision making.
