Field measurements of fire behavior; fire radiative power and energy from infrared cameras for Fort Stewart 2024

Field measurements collected during the 2024 study fires at Fort Stewart to calculate Fire Radiative Power (FRP) and Fire Radiative Energy (FRE) from infrared cameras in sandhill longleaf pine. These field observations were co-located with three-dimensional fuel and laser scan plots to allow for leveraging of these other data (see datasets from Loudermilk et al). Radiometers (see dataset from Paki et al) were also deployed over the fuel plots at different locations than the infrared cameras and are meant to be used with the infrared camera data.

method Design and calibration: FireCAMs created by Dan Julio: https://www.danjuliodesigns.com/products/firecam.html and all specifications can be found on his GitHub: https://github.com/danjulio/firecam To prevent saturation of the IR camera at high temperatures, all cameras have a NDIR10A neutral density filter mounted to them. Before each burn, the calibration of the neutral density filters are verified using a blackbody.
