method | Experimental Design and Data Collected: Two Environmental Beta Attenuation (EBAM) monitors were deployed downwind of three prescribed fires at Eglin Air Force Base in March of 2023 to measure smoke from the fires. Deployment locations were chosen based on the expected wind direction on the day of the burn and the location of the Georgia Tech instrument trailer in order to augment the spatial distribution of smoke measurements obtained. EBAMs measure fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in the atmosphere by collecting particulates on a filter that intercepts the air flow. Beta particles are directed at the filter, and the beta particle attenuation gives a measure of particulate matter deposited on the filter. |
