Fuel Moisture Content Data from the 2023 Department of Defense Wildland Fire Science Initiative Eglin Air Force Base Campaign

To measure fuel moisture content, vegetation was collected at adjacent burn units with similar land cover, species composition, and time since the last prescribed burn to G-20 and G-25. This dataset

method Vegetation was collected at an adjacent burn unit with similar land cover, species composition, and time since the last burn. Three replicates of a fuel type were collected one to three times throughout the prescribed burn day. Sample collection typically started near the test fire window and continued every 60-90 minutes until burning operations were complete. The fuel moisture sampling dates were March 8, 11, 12, 16, and 19. Note that March 8 was not a prescribed burn day. On this day, hard-to-access fuel types were sampled in case they were not accessible on prescribed burn days. The number of times a fuel type was sampled varied based on data needs, accessibility, and prescribed burn duration. 1-hour and 10-hour fuels were collected once on March 8, 12, 16, and 19 and twice on March 11. 100-hour fuel was collected once on March 8 and 11. 1000-hour fuel was collected once on March 11. Detached and dead longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) needles and turkey oak (Quercus laevis) leaves and fine vegetation such as graminoids were collected once on March 12, twice on March 16 and 19, and three times on March 11. Detached and dead leaves from oak (Quercus) species other than turkey oak were collected once on March 12 and 16, twice on March 19, and three times on March 11. Evergreen oak species leaves—other than turkey oak—and longleaf pine needles removed from living branches were collected once on March 11 and twice on March 16 and 19. Turkey oak leaves removed from living branches were collected twice on March 16 and 19. Detached and dead hardwood leaves and pine needles underneath overstories comprised of broadleaf and evergreen species were collected once on March 12, 16, and 19 and twice on March 8. Pinecones were collected once on March 12 and 16 and twice on March 11 and 19. NOTE: A prescribed burn was not conducted at L-25 during this campaign; therefore, fuel moisture content data was not collected at this unit.
