Tree inventory and field measurements of litter and duff collected at Osceola National Forest in 2022

The dataset includes tree inventory data (i.e., tree records) and litter and duff measurements collected before and after prescribed burning at Osceola National Forest (Florida) in 2022 in 72 field plots. The sampling was located at the research units that were part of the long-term burn experiment that was established in 1958 to evaluate the effect of fire return interval (FRI) on fuel accumulation, and that is still ongoing. The experiment consisted of six replicates of four fire treatments that were established in 24 research units (~0.85 ha each). The treatments consisted of prescribed fire repeated on a FRI of every 1, 2, or 4 years, and a control (unburned) treatment. These are flatwoods with overstory dominated by longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill) and understory dominated by saw palmetto (Serenoa repens [Bartr.] Small) and gallberry (ilex glabra [L.] Gray). At these burn units, a range of data was collected, and instruments were deployed to characterize fine-scale variations in vegetation structure, quantify spatial heterogeneity, and measure fuel estimation and consumption. Datasets can be located by searching the portal using the keywords "Osceola National Forest 2022" and/or "winter burn plots."
