Fuel Moisture Content Data collected at the Winter Burn Plots located at Osceola National Forest in February 2022

To measure fuel moisture content, vegetation was collected at adjacent burn units with similar land cover, species composition, and time since the last prescribed burn. This dataset provides fuel moisture content data by fuel type, collected in February 2022.

method Study site Osceola National Forest is a 200,000-acre National Forest between Lake City, FL, and Jacksonville, FL, bisected by Interstate 10. The long-term winter burn plots were installed in the early 1960s for research and education. The winter burn plots are east of Ocean Pond off Forest Service Road 266. They are burned on 1-, 2-, and 4-year rotations. There are also unburned plots (check plots). In 2022, eighteen burn units (six 1-year, six 2-year, six 4-year) were available for prescribed burning. All 1-, 2-, and 4-year units were prescribed burns on February 3 and 4, 2022. See Burn_Unit_Layout_Osceola_2022.pdf for a schematic of the burn units.
