A multiscale study of the coupling between flow, fire and vegetation static field experiments: three-dimensional wind and temperature from 2022-2025

This dataset contains sonic anemometer data collected during multiple static field experiments at Tall Timbers Station and Land Conservancy (TT) in October 2022 and the Savannah River Site (SRS) between May 2023 and June 2025. Horizontal and vertical wind speed and temperature were collected at 10-Hz. The data is from a series of experiments using liquid pool fires and small-scale laboratory work to characterize the way structure and heterogeneity of fuel elements change the drag and convective heat transfer in plume dynamics. Other datasets were collected and complement this dataset as part of the Department of Defense project RC20-1362. All related datasets titles start with "A multiscale study of the coupling between flow, fire and vegetation static field experiments:". The TT field experiments were conducted using multiple liquid pool fire (pan) configurations on a clearing where all vegetation was removed. Nine sonic anemometers were mounted on towers downwind from the pans in three arrays at 6, 10 and 30-ft (1.8, 3 and 9.1-m) heights. A control sonic was located 14.6-m upwind of the center pan on a 5-ft (1.5-m) tower. The SRS field experiments were conducted using multiple pan configurations within a 2-ha loblolly and long leaf pine plantation. Understory vegetation was removed in all burns and tree density reduced in some burns. Nineteen sonic anemometers were mounted on 11 towers around the pan configurations at heights 6, 10, 25 and 40-ft (1.8, 3, 7.6 and 12.2-m). Tower configurations were changed due instrument availability and prevailing winds. For exact sonic location and pan configuration for each burn, see burn layout and documentation in the dataset: A Multiscale study of the coupling between flow, fire and vegetation: field experiments – burn layout and documentation (https://doi.org/10.60594/W4NC73, see Annotations section for Metadata link).
