A multiscale study of the coupling between flow, fire and vegetation static field experiments: burn layout and documentation from 2022-2025

This dataset contains detailed documentation and metadata describing the data collected during multiple static field experiments at Tall Timbers Station and Land Conservancy (TT) in October 2022 and the Savannah River Site (SRS) between May 2023 and June 2025. All related datasets titles start with "A multiscale study of the coupling between flow, fire and vegetation static field experiments:". This data is from a series of experiments using liquid pool fires to characterize the way structure and heterogeneity of fuel elements change the drag and convective heat transfer in plume dynamics. Other datasets were collected and complement this dataset as part of the Department of Defense project RC20-1362. The TT field experiments were conducted using multiple liquid pool fire (pan) configurations on a clearing where all vegetation was removed. The SRS field experiments were conducted using multiple pan configurations within a 2-ha loblolly and long leaf pine plantation. Understory vegetation was removed in all burns and tree density reduced in some burns. This dataset includes a user guide, burn date summary, data collection summary, instrument layout (burn layout) in local x, y, z format for each burn and a master configuration in NAD 1983 UTM Zone 17N coordinates. The user guide describes the purpose, sites, instruments, methods, and data structure of all data collected. The burn date summary describes the location, date, start and end time and other basic parameters for each experiment. The collection summary describes what sensors were used during each field campaign. A burn layout is provided for each burn describing the location of all sensors relative to platform center.
