Osceola National Forest is a 200,000-acre National Forest between Lake City, FL, and Jacksonville, FL, bisected by Interstate 10. The long-term winter burn plots were installed in the early 1960s for research and education. The winter burn plots are east of Ocean Pond off Forest Service Road 266. They are burned on 1-, 2-, and 4-year rotations. There are also unburned plots (check plots). In 2022, eighteen burn units (six 1-year, six 2-year, six 4-year) were available for prescribed burning. All 1-, 2-, and 4-year units were prescribed burns on February 3 and 4, 2022. See Burn_Unit_Layout_Osceola_2022.pdf for a schematic of the burn units. In 2021 and 2022, sampling occurred in nine randomly selected burn unitsâthree 1-year, three 2-year, and three 4-year units. At each selected burn unit, an edge and interior transect were established where the edge transect was parallel to the burn unit edge and the interior transect was perpendicular to the edge transect. Four 5x5 meter macroplots were established at each burn unit, where two 5x5 meter macroplots were along the edge transect and two 5x5 meter macroplots were along the interior transect. Along each transect, one 5x5 was designated for pre-burn sampling and the other for post-burn sampling. In each edge 5x5 meter macroplot, two 3D fuels clip plots were establishedâone at the center and one randomly selected. In each of the interior 5x5 meter macroplots, three 3D fuel clip plots were establishedâone at the center and two randomly selected. In total, 45 pre-burn and 45 post-burn 3D clip plots were established, with five pre-burn and five post-burn 3D fuel clip plots sampled in each burn unit. |
